  • Ash Wednesday Service

Mt. Carmel’s Ash Wednesday Service will be on Wednesday February 26th at 7pm

Ash Wednesday is the first day of Lent. By the fourth century the Western Church had determined that the Lenten period of fasting and renewal should correspond to Christ’s forty-day fast (Matt. 4:2), and, by counting forty days back from Easter (excluding Sundays, which remain “feast” days), arrived at the Wednesday seven weeks before Easter. At one time Lent was primarily viewed as a period during which converts prepared for baptism on Easter Sunday, but later the season become a general time of penitence and renewal for all Christians. Thus Ash Wednesday became the day that marked the beginning of the Lenten renewal.

The aim of Ash Wednesday worships is threefold: to meditate on our mortality, sinfulness, and need of a savior; to renew our commitment to daily repentance in the Lenten season and in all of life; and to remember with confidence and gratitude that Christ has conquered death and sin. Ash Wednesday worship, then, is filled with gospel truth. It is a witness to the power and beauty of our union with Christ and to the daily dying and rising with Christ that this entails. (taken from The Worship Sourcebook, pg. 541).

  • Goals for 2020

After prayerfully seeking the Lord’s will for His church, the Mt. Carmel Session believes that the following are our church top priorities for 2020. We are asking everyone to pray and support these top five goals:

    1. Renewed Vision for Mt. Carmel- Where are we at as a church? Where does Jesus want to take us? How can we get there? Pastor Eric is spearheading this effort that includes meeting with people and key leaders individually to gather information via a SWOT (Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, and Threats) Analysis to help the session come to a consensus of where we are at as a church. The next step will be forming a Vision Team that will do the work of discerning where Jesus wants to take us as a church. Then Pastor Eric will gather an Implementation Team to help provide recommendations to the session about how we can get there as a church and create a ministry structure to accomplish our Renewed Vision.

    2. Children’s and Student Ministry Development- We will prayerfully form two new teams (Children’s Ministry and Student Ministry) to develop a comprehensive ministry for the youth of our church and in our community from infancy through high school. Please prayerfully consider becoming a part of one of these teams.

    3. The Glory of God- We will continue to pray to know God, His Heart for people, and His great love more. We will seek to see God’s Glory in our Sunday morning worship services as we consider what the bible says about our stewardship, worship, suffering, in Jesus’ resurrection, our families, global mission, creation, recreation, work, church, world, and Jesus’ incarnation. As we encounter God’s Glory we are trusting God’s Spirit to transform us so that others will be drawn to embrace Jesus as Savior and Lord. We need everyone to prayerfully consider being more consistent in their church attendance.

    4. Work toward becoming a healthier church family- We need to seek to heal, reconcile, and grow deeper in our relationships. This happens through worshipping, praying, fellowshipping, fasting, and working together. Every Third Thursday the session is inviting everyone to fast, pray, and gather together for a time of community prayer, testimony, worship, and fellowship at 6:30pm. Please mark your calendars to attend Third Thursdays beginning in February.

    5. Chronologically read or listen to the entire bible together- We will be following a bible reading plan from The Bible Recap by D-Group, Year 2, that will begin February 1st. The plan is available via a podcast and includes a very short teaching to aid your bible reading. For those that do not use podcasts or prefer not to, we will place the bible readings for the upcoming week in the church bulletin, the church’s Facebook page and website, and in the weekly Flock Notes emailed out each Friday. Reading the scriptures together as a church community will help unite us to God and one another. Will you read the entire bible this year?
